Opening Keynote: George Siemens, University of Texas - Arlington

George Siemens is a writer, theorist, speaker, and researcher on learning, networks, technology, analytics and visualization, openness, and organizational effectiveness in digital environments.  He is the originator of Connectivism theory and author of the article Connectivism: A Learning Theory for the Digital Age and the book Knowing Knowledge — an exploration of the impact of the changed context and characteristics of knowledge. Siemens joined the faculty and staff of The University of Texas at Arlington in December 2013 as the executive director of the Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge Research Lab or LINK Lab.

Mike Sharples is Professor of Educational Technology at The Open University in the United Kingdom and Academic Lead at FutureLearn. He has an international reputation for research in the design of learning technologies. His current projects include the design of learning at massive scale, the nQuire-it platform for citizen inquiry learning, and the Juxtalearn project to enhance science and technology learning.  He was founding president of the International Association for Mobile Learning.

Eric Foner is the leading contemporary historian of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period, having published Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877, winner of many prizes for history writing, and more than 10 other books on the topic. Foner's The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery won the Pulitzer Prize for History, Lincoln Prize, and the Bancroft Prize. His free online courses on "The Civil War and Reconstruction," published in 2014, are available from Columbia University on edX.

Stephanie McCurry is a specialist in nineteenth-century American history, with a focus on the American South, the Civil War era, and the history of women and gender. Her book Confederate Reckoning: Power and Politics in the Civil War was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for History. Her free online course, "History of the Slave South," explores the relationship between slavery and democracy, is available on Coursera.

Alice Kessler-Harris is the R. Gordon Hoxie Professor of American History at Columbia University and former president of the Organization of American Historians. She specializes in the history of American labor and the comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of women and gender. She has begun planning her upcoming online course, "Women Have Always Worked" for ColumbiaX on edX, based on her book of the same name.

Anant Agarwal is the CEO of edX, an online learning destination founded by Harvard and MIT. Anant taught the first edX course on circuits and electronics from MIT, which drew 155,000 students from 162 countries. He has served as the director of CSAIL, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. He is a successful serial entrepreneur, having co-founded several companies including Tilera Corporation, which created the Tile multicore processor, and Virtual Machine Works.

Greg Bybee is the Director of Learning Products and Solutions at NovoEd, where he manages the team responsible for all learning experiences on NovoEd’s social learning platform. Greg serves on the Board of Directors for Leadership High School and advises a number of startups, software vendors, and investors regarding the education technology market. Previously, Greg was a Fellow with NewSchools Venture Fund, an intern at Coursera, and a consultant at McKinsey. Greg holds an MA-Education and MBA from Stanford and a BA in Applied Math from Harvard.

Ajay Kapur is President and CEO of Kadenze, the Arts and Creative Technology MOOC. He received an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in 2007 from University of Victoria combining computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, music and psychology with a focus on intelligent music systems and media technology. Ajay graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University in 2002. Kapur has published over 100 technical papers and presented lectures across the world on music technology, human computer interface for artists, robotics for making sound, modern digital orchestras, and education technology. 

Andreina Parisi-Amon is a Teaching & Learning Specialist and Research Manager on the Course Success team at Coursera. There she focuses on the development and implementation of best practices in MOOC design based on the experience of other courses on the platform and educational research. Andreina also supports the growing community of researchers at Partner Institutions, supporting ongoing MOOC educational research and managing the protection and sharing of learner data. Andreina graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke and a PhD in Bioengineering at Stanford.

Fiona Hollands is the Associate Director and Senior Researcher at the Center for Benefit-Cost Studies of Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Fiona conducts research and evaluation in education, primarily on the impact of technology on teaching and learning.  She is the author of MOOCs: Expectations and Reality and MOOCs in Higher Education: Institutional Goals and Paths Forward. Fiona earned a B.A. Honours Degree in Pure and Applied Biology from Oxford University, England, and a Ph.D. in Politics and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Al Filreis is Kelly Professor, Faculty Director of the Kelly Writers House, Director of the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing, Co-Director of PennSound, and Publisher of Jacket2 - all at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his books are Secretaries of the Moon, Wallace Stevens & the Actual World, Modernism from Left to Right, and Counter- Revolution of the Word. He has taught a massive open online course, "ModPo," to 42,000 students in 2012 and 37,000 in 2013 on Coursera.

Shigeru Miyagawa is Professor of Linguistics and Kocho-Manjiro Professor of Japanese Language and Culture at MIT, Chair of the OpenCourseWare Faculty Advisory Committee at MIT, and Director of Online Education at the University of Tokyo. Dr. Miyagawa spearheaded the MIT OpenCourseWare project. His latest online course, Visualizing Japan (1850s-1930s): Westernization, Protest, Modernity, was released on MITx and HarvardX.
